Eight pills you shouldn’t take because they damage your kidneys

That headline is misleading. There is no universal list of “8 pills you should never take because they damage your kidneys.” Kidney risk depends on dose, duration, hydration, age, and existing health conditions.

That said, some medicines are known to stress or harm the kidneys in certain situations, especially when misused or taken long-term.

⚠️ Medicines most often linked with kidney stress

1. Common painkillers (NSAIDs)

Ibuprofen
Diclofenac
Naproxen

  • Can reduce blood flow to kidneys
  • Risk increases with dehydration or long-term use
  • Usually safe in short, correct doses for healthy people

2. Diuretics (“water pills”)

Furosemide

  • Can cause dehydration or electrolyte imbalance if not monitored
  • Commonly used safely under medical supervision

3. Blood pressure medicines (ACE inhibitors / ARBs)

Lisinopril
Losartan

  • May slightly change kidney function at the start
  • Often protect kidneys long-term, especially in diabetes or hypertension

4. Lithium (psychiatric medication)

Lithium

  • Long-term use can affect kidney function
  • Requires regular blood monitoring

5. Certain antibiotics / contrast dyes

  • Some antibiotics and imaging contrast agents can affect kidneys in vulnerable people
  • Always used with medical supervision

🧠 Key reality check

  • These drugs are not “dangerous by default”
  • Many are essential and life-saving
  • Problems usually occur with incorrect use or existing kidney disease

🚨 Higher risk if you have:

Kidney disease

  • Dehydration
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Older age
  • Taking multiple medications together
