Here’s how to clean dirty bed pillows to leave them white and smelling sweet.

To freshen up dirty bed pillows and remove odors, the best method depends on the pillow material. Always check the care label first.

How to clean washable bed pillows

You’ll need:

  • Mild laundry detergent
  • Baking soda (optional, for odors)
  • Clean dryer balls or tennis balls (optional, for fluffing)

Steps:

  1. Remove pillowcases and covers
    • Wash covers separately according to their care instructions.
  2. Check the pillow label
    • Many polyester and some down/feather pillows can be washed.
    • Memory foam and latex pillows usually should not go in the washing machine.
  3. Wash the pillows
    • Wash two pillows together to keep the machine balanced.
    • Use a gentle cycle with warm water (if allowed).
    • Use a small amount of detergent to avoid residue.
  4. Freshen the pillows
    • Adding a little baking soda during washing may help reduce smells.
    • Avoid mixing cleaning products, especially bleach with vinegar or ammonia.
  5. Dry completely
    • Dry on a low setting if permitted.
    • Add dryer balls or clean tennis balls to help restore fluffiness.
    • Make sure the inside is completely dry before using to prevent mildew.

Keep pillows fresher longer

  • Use washable pillow protectors.
  • Wash pillowcases regularly.
  • Air pillows out occasionally.
  • Replace pillows when they lose support or cannot be cleaned effectively.

If you tell me whether your pillows are memory foam, feather/down, microfiber, or polyester, I can give the safest cleaning method for that type.
