Warning signs of high blood sugar

High blood sugar (hyperglycemia) can develop gradually or suddenly, and the warning signs often depend on how high your glucose level is and how long it stays elevated.

Common warning signs

  • Increased thirst (feeling very dry all the time)
  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Fatigue or feeling unusually weak
  • Blurred vision
  • Headaches
  • Dry mouth

More noticeable or concerning signs

  • Increased hunger, even after eating
  • Slow-healing cuts or wounds
  • Recurrent infections (skin, gums, or urinary tract)
  • Unexplained weight loss (more common in uncontrolled diabetes)
  • Tingling or numbness in hands or feet

Severe high blood sugar (medical emergency)

If blood sugar becomes very high, especially in people with Type 2 Diabetes or undiagnosed diabetes, symptoms can include:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Fruity-smelling breath
  • Rapid, deep breathing
  • Confusion, drowsiness, or difficulty staying awake

These can be signs of dangerous conditions like diabetic ketoacidosis (more common in type 1 but can occur in severe cases).

When to take it seriously

  • Symptoms that keep getting worse over hours or days
  • Very high blood sugar readings (if you’re monitoring)
  • Any confusion, vomiting, or trouble breathing

If you want, I can also explain what causes high blood sugar, or how to bring it down quickly and safely at home.
