Here’s how to clean dirty bed pillows to leave them white and smelling sweet.

If your bed pillows have become yellowed, musty, or dirty over time, you can often freshen them with a careful wash. The best method depends on the pillow filling (down, feather, polyester, or foam), so check the care label first.

How to wash pillows and freshen them

1. Check the label

  • Many polyester, cotton, and down/feather pillows can be machine-washed.
  • Memory foam or latex pillows usually should not go in the washing machine because they can break apart.

2. Wash washable pillows

  • Wash two pillows at a time to keep the machine balanced.
  • Use warm water (if the label allows) and a gentle cycle.
  • Add a small amount of mild detergent—too much soap can be difficult to rinse out.

3. Brighten and remove odors

  • For washable pillows, adding a small amount of baking soda during washing can help reduce odors.
  • Avoid harsh bleaching unless the manufacturer specifically allows it, as it can weaken fibers and damage some fillings.

4. Rinse thoroughly

  • Run an extra rinse cycle if possible to remove leftover detergent.

5. Dry completely

  • Dry pillows fully to prevent mildew.
  • Use a low-heat setting if allowed and add dryer balls or clean tennis balls to help fluff down and feather pillows.
  • Stop occasionally to fluff and check that the inside is dry.

Extra tips for fresher pillows

  • Use pillow protectors to reduce sweat and stains.
  • Wash pillowcases weekly.
  • Replace pillows when they no longer support your head and neck or remain lumpy after cleaning.

If a pillow has mold, a persistent musty smell, or signs of heavy damage, replacing it may be safer than trying to restore it.
