-Here’s What the Lines on Bath Towels Actually Mean.

The lines on bath towels are often misunderstood. They are not there to show where to fold the towel or indicate a “special” cleaning area. They are mainly a result of how towels are made.

The raised or woven bands (often called dobby borders) serve a few purposes:

  • Help keep the towel’s shape: The tighter weave in these bands helps reduce stretching and distortion after many washes.
  • Prevent fraying: The denser stitching at the ends helps reinforce the towel’s edges.
  • Improve appearance: They add a decorative finish and make towels look more polished.
  • Aid manufacturing: The different weave pattern helps machines create and finish the towel properly.

The wide strip near the ends of many bath towels is therefore mostly a structural and decorative feature, not a hidden indicator of where to dry your hands or a sign of higher absorbency. The soft looped areas around it are usually the parts designed to absorb water.
