Here is a simple way to freshen and whiten dirty bed pillows (if the care label allows washing):
How to wash dirty pillows so they look cleaner and smell fresh
1. Check the pillow label first
- Most polyester and cotton-filled pillows can be machine washed.
- Memory foam, latex, and specialty pillows usually should not go in the washing machine; they need spot cleaning.
2. Pre-treat yellow stains
Yellowing is often caused by sweat, body oils, and moisture.
Mix:
- ½ cup baking soda
- A small amount of liquid laundry detergent
- Warm water to make a paste
Apply to stained areas for 20–30 minutes, then rinse or wash.
3. Machine wash (for washable pillows)
- Wash two pillows at a time to balance the machine.
- Use warm water (if allowed by the label).
- Add your normal detergent.
- Add ½ cup baking soda to help remove odors.
- Add ½ cup white vinegar during the rinse cycle to help soften fabric and reduce smells.
4. Dry completely
- Use a dryer on low or medium heat (check the label).
- Add clean dryer balls or tennis balls in socks to help fluff pillows.
- Make sure the inside is completely dry—damp pillows can develop a musty smell or mold.
5. Keep pillows smelling fresh longer
- Use a washable pillow protector.
- Wash pillowcases weekly.
- Air pillows in sunlight occasionally.
- Fluff pillows daily to reduce moisture buildup.
Important: Avoid mixing vinegar with bleach—this can create harmful fumes. If your pillows remain yellow, lumpy, or smell musty after washing, replacing them may be the healthier option because old pillows can hold dust mites, allergens, and body oils.
