🧠 How “ear crystals” cause vertigo
Inside your inner ear are balance canals filled with fluid. Small crystals help detect movement.
When they dislodge, they:
- Float into the wrong canal
- Send false signals to the brain
- Cause spinning sensations (vertigo)
🔄 Most effective treatment: repositioning maneuvers
🛏️ 1. Epley Maneuver (most common)
Often recommended by doctors for BPPV.
What it does:
Moves crystals out of the wrong canal back to where they belong.
Basic idea:
It involves a sequence of guided head and body positions.
👉 Important:
- Should be done correctly (preferably taught by a doctor or physiotherapist first)
- Works well for many people with BPPV
🔄 2. Semont maneuver (alternative method)
- Faster head and body movements
- Used when Epley doesn’t fully help
- Also best learned with professional guidance
🚶 3. Brandt–Daroff exercises (home practice)
- Repeated movements over days
- Helps brain adapt and reduce dizziness
- Slower but safe for many people
🧘 What else helps reduce vertigo symptoms
💧 Stay hydrated
Dehydration can worsen dizziness.
🛌 Avoid sudden head movements
- Get up slowly
- Turn head gradually
🌙 Sleep positioning
- Slightly elevated head may help
- Avoid sleeping on the affected side initially
☕ Limit triggers
- Excess caffeine
- Alcohol
- High salt intake (in some cases)
⚠️ When to see a doctor urgently
Not all vertigo is BPPV. Seek medical care if you have:
- Persistent dizziness lasting hours or days
- Severe headache
- Weakness or numbness
- Vision or speech problems
- Hearing loss
These could suggest other neurological conditions, not just inner ear crystals.
