How to Get Rid of Milia: Those Annoying Fat Cysts

How to Get Rid of Milia: Those Small White Bumps on the Skin

Milia are tiny, firm, white or pearl-colored bumps that often appear around the eyes, cheeks, nose, and forehead. Despite being sometimes called “fat cysts,” they are not made of fat—they are small pockets of trapped keratin (a protein found in skin) beneath the surface.

They are common, harmless, and often go away on their own, but some people want to remove them for cosmetic reasons.

What you can do at home

1. Don’t squeeze or pop them

Milia are not like pimples. Trying to squeeze them can:

  • Damage the skin
  • Cause scarring
  • Lead to irritation or infection

2. Use gentle exfoliation

Products containing ingredients such as:

  • Retinoids (retinol or prescription retinoids)
  • Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs)
  • Beta hydroxy acid (salicylic acid)

may help encourage skin turnover over time.

⚠️ Use carefully around the eye area, where skin is thinner and more sensitive.

3. Review your skincare products

Heavy creams or oily products around the eyes may contribute to clogged skin in some people.

Consider:

  • Using non-comedogenic moisturizers
  • Avoiding very thick products directly on areas prone to milia

4. Protect your skin from sun damage

Sun damage can affect how skin sheds naturally. Daily sunscreen can support overall skin health.

Professional treatments (fastest removal)

A dermatologist or trained skincare professional can remove milia using methods such as:

  • Sterile extraction
  • Chemical peels
  • Laser treatments (in selected cases)

Do not attempt to cut or puncture milia yourself.
