How to wash yellowed pillows: 3 tips to keep them white and new

Here are three practical ways to help clean yellowed pillows and keep them looking fresher. Always check the care label first, as some pillows (especially memory foam or latex) should not be machine washed.

  1. Machine wash with a gentle detergent
    • Wash two pillows together to help balance the load.
    • Use warm water if the care label allows.
    • Run an extra rinse cycle to remove detergent residue.
  2. Boost whitening naturally
    • Add about ½ cup of baking soda to the wash to help remove odors.
    • For white, washable pillows, an oxygen-based bleach (following the product directions) can help lift stains without the harshness of chlorine bleach. Avoid using chlorine bleach unless the care label specifically permits it.
  3. Dry thoroughly
    • Tumble dry on low heat if the pillow is dryer-safe.
    • Add clean tennis balls or dryer balls to help restore fluffiness.
    • Make sure the pillow is completely dry before using it to prevent mold and mildew.

To help prevent yellowing:

  • Use pillow protectors under your pillowcases.
  • Wash pillowcases weekly and pillow protectors regularly.
  • Wash pillows every 3–6 months if the care label allows.
  • Replace pillows when they lose support, remain stained despite cleaning, or no longer spring back after fluffing (often every 1–2 years, depending on the type and use).
