If you have hip pain, it’s a clear sign that… see more

A post that says “If you have hip pain, it’s a clear sign that…” is almost certainly oversimplifying the issue. Hip pain is not a clear sign of any one condition. It can have many different causes, ranging from minor muscle strain to conditions that require medical attention.

Some common causes include:

  • Osteoarthritis – A common cause in older adults, leading to pain and stiffness that often worsens with activity.
  • Trochanteric bursitis – Inflammation of the fluid-filled sac on the outside of the hip, causing pain when lying on that side or walking.
  • Muscle or tendon strains – Often related to exercise or overuse.
  • Sciatica – A pinched nerve in the lower back can cause pain that radiates through the hip and down the leg.
  • Hip fracture – Especially after a fall, particularly in older adults. This requires urgent medical evaluation.
  • Less commonly, infections, inflammatory arthritis, or reduced blood supply to the hip can also cause pain.

When to seek prompt medical care

You should seek medical attention promptly if hip pain:

  • Follows a significant fall or injury
  • Makes it impossible to bear weight
  • Is accompanied by fever, redness, or marked swelling
  • Comes with sudden severe pain or a visibly deformed joint
  • Persists for several weeks despite rest or keeps getting worse

What you can do for mild hip pain

If the pain is mild and there’s no serious injury:

  • Rest from activities that worsen the pain.
  • Apply ice for the first 24–48 hours if it’s a recent injury.
  • Gradually return to gentle movement as tolerated.
  • Consider seeing a healthcare professional if the pain doesn’t improve or recurs.

The location of the pain also matters. Pain in the groin, outside of the hip, buttock, or down the leg can point to different causes. If you describe where the pain is, when it started, and what makes it better or worse, I can help explain the most likely possibilities.
