Itchy Scalp — Main Causes Explained
1. Dry scalp
One of the most common reasons.
- Skin loses moisture (especially in cold or dry weather)
- Can feel tight, flaky, and itchy
- Often improves with moisturizing shampoos or oils
This is different from dandruff, even though they can look similar.
2. Dandruff (seborrheic dermatitis)
A very common condition called Seborrheic dermatitis.
- Flaky white or yellowish scales
- Itching and irritation
- Often worsens with stress or oily skin
Caused by overgrowth of a natural yeast on the skin combined with oil production.
3. Hair product buildup or irritation
Shampoos, gels, sprays, and oils can:
- Build up on the scalp
- Block pores
- Cause itching or sensitivity
Some people also react to fragrances or chemicals (contact dermatitis).
4. Allergic reaction
Some ingredients in hair dye or shampoo can trigger allergies.
- Redness
- Burning sensation
- Intense itching
This is known as contact dermatitis.
5. Head lice
More common in children but can affect adults too.
- Intense itching, especially behind ears and neck
- Small eggs (nits) attached to hair strands
Requires specific treatment to eliminate.
6. Fungal infections
Sometimes the scalp becomes infected by fungus.
- Itching
- Patchy hair loss
- Scaling or inflammation
More common in humid environments or weakened immunity.
7. Skin conditions like psoriasis
A chronic condition called Psoriasis can affect the scalp.
- Thick, silvery scales
- Red patches
- Persistent itching
⚠️ When to see a doctor
Seek medical advice if:
- Itching lasts more than 2–3 weeks
- There is hair loss or bald patches
- Severe redness or pain appears
- Over-the-counter shampoos don’t help
