Lou Gehrig’s syndrome: Here are the first symptoms of this disease

Lou Gehrig’s Syndrome: Early Symptoms You Should Know

“Lou Gehrig’s syndrome” is the common name for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a serious condition that affects the nerves responsible for voluntary muscle movement.

It is also known as ALS. The disease gradually damages motor neurons, leading to muscle weakness and loss of control over time.

⚠️ Early warning signs of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease)

Early symptoms are often subtle and may be mistaken for fatigue or normal aging.

1. Muscle weakness in hands or legs

  • Difficulty holding objects
  • Trouble buttoning clothes
  • Weak grip strength

2. Twitching or muscle cramps

  • Small involuntary muscle movements (fasciculations)
  • Cramps in arms, legs, or shoulders
  • Often noticed at rest

3. Clumsiness or dropping things

  • Frequent accidents with objects
  • Trouble with fine motor skills
  • Loss of coordination

4. Difficulty walking or tripping

  • Feeling unstable
  • Dragging feet
  • Reduced balance

5. Slurred speech

  • Words may sound unclear
  • Difficulty forming sentences
  • Speech becomes slower over time

6. Trouble swallowing

  • Choking on food or liquids
  • Feeling like food “gets stuck”
  • Gradual change in eating habits

7. Muscle stiffness

  • Tight or rigid muscles
  • Reduced flexibility
  • Pain or discomfort in limbs

8. Fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest

  • Muscles feel weak even after sleeping
  • Everyday tasks become harder

9. Subtle changes in hand strength

  • Opening jars becomes difficult
  • Writing may become shaky
  • Loss of precision in movements

🧠 Important medical reality

Early ALS symptoms can resemble other, more common conditions such as:

  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Nerve compression
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Benign muscle twitching

That’s why diagnosis always requires neurological evaluation.

🚨 When to seek medical advice

You should see a doctor if:

  • Weakness is progressive (getting worse over weeks/months)
  • Symptoms appear in multiple body areas
  • Speech or swallowing becomes difficult
  • Muscle wasting is noticeable
