Mashed potatoes are a classic side dish made from boiled potatoes that are mashed until smooth and creamy.

Basic Mashed Potatoes Recipe (Serves 4)

Ingredients

  • 2 lb (900 g) potatoes (such as Russet Potato or Yukon Gold Potato)
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup (120 ml) warm milk or cream
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Peel the potatoes (optional) and cut into chunks.
  2. Place in a pot, cover with cold water, and add a pinch of salt.
  3. Bring to a boil and cook for 15–20 minutes until fork-tender.
  4. Drain well.
  5. Mash the potatoes with a potato masher or ricer.
  6. Add butter and warm milk gradually while mashing.
  7. Season with salt and pepper.
  8. Serve hot.

Tips for Creamier Mashed Potatoes

  • Use warm milk rather than cold.
  • Don’t overmix with a blender or food processor, or the potatoes can become gluey.
  • Add roasted garlic, chives, or cheese for extra flavor.

Variations

  • Garlic mashed potatoes: Mix in roasted garlic.
  • Cheesy mashed potatoes: Add shredded cheddar or parmesan.
  • Healthier version: Replace some butter with plain Greek yogurt.

Mashed potatoes pair well with roasted chicken, grilled fish, meatloaf, stews, and many vegetable dishes. 🍽️🥔
