potato and onion bake,

A potato and onion bake is a simple, comforting dish with thinly sliced potatoes and onions baked until soft, golden, and slightly crisp on top. It works as a side dish for meat, eggs, or can stand alone with a salad.

🥔 Potato & Onion Bake

Ingredients:

  • Potato (about 4–5 medium, thinly sliced)
  • Onion (2 large, thinly sliced)
  • 3–4 tbsp oil or melted butter
  • 1 cup milk or cream (optional, for a creamy version)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp garlic (optional, minced or powder)
  • 1 tsp dried thyme or rosemary (optional)
  • Grated cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions:

Start by preheating your oven to 180°C (350°F). Lightly grease a baking dish with oil or butter.

Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the dish, then half of the onions. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and herbs. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and onions.

If you want it creamy, pour milk or cream evenly over the layers. Drizzle the top with a bit of oil or dot with butter.

Cover the dish with foil and bake for about 45 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake another 20–30 minutes until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.

If using cheese, sprinkle it on top during the last 10–15 minutes so it melts and browns nicely.

Let it rest for 5–10 minutes before serving so it firms up slightly.

If you want, I can also give you a spicy version, a Pakistani-style version, or a faster stovetop shortcut.
