Potato and Turnip Mash Recipe (Creamy Comfort Side Dish)
A lighter twist on traditional mashed potatoes, with turnips adding a slightly sweet, earthy flavor.
Ingredients
- 1 kg potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
- 500 g turnips (or rutabaga), peeled and cut into chunks
- 3–4 tablespoons butter
- ½ cup milk or cream (adjust for desired texture)
- 2–3 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
- 1–2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley or chives (optional)
Instructions
- Cook the vegetables
- Place potatoes and turnips in a large pot.
- Cover with cold water and add a pinch of salt.
- Bring to a boil and cook for about 20–25 minutes, until both are very tender.
- Drain well
- Drain the vegetables thoroughly.
- Let them sit for a minute or two so excess moisture evaporates.
- Mash
- Add butter and mash until combined.
- Gradually add warm milk or cream until you reach your preferred creamy texture.
- Season
- Mix in salt, black pepper, and garlic if using.
- Stir in fresh herbs before serving.
Tips for extra flavor
- Roast the turnips and potatoes instead of boiling for a deeper, sweeter flavor.
- Add a spoonful of sour cream or cream cheese for extra richness.
- A pinch of nutmeg pairs well with turnips.
- For a healthier version, replace some butter with olive oil.
This mash pairs especially well with roasted chicken, grilled meats, fish, or a hearty vegetable dish.
