Sebaceous Cysts Explained: Main Causes and Home Remedy Solutions
A sebaceous cyst is a small, usually slow-growing lump that forms under the skin. The term is commonly used for several types of skin cysts, although many are technically epidermoid cysts rather than true cysts of the sebaceous (oil) glands. They often appear as smooth, round bumps filled with a thick, whitish material called keratin.
Common causes of sebaceous cysts
Sebaceous cysts can develop when a skin pore or hair follicle becomes blocked. Common causes and risk factors include:
- Blocked oil glands or skin pores – Trapped skin cells and oils can form a cyst.
- Trauma to the skin – Injuries, cuts, or irritation may trigger cyst formation.
- Swollen or damaged hair follicles – Cysts can develop around hair follicles.
- Hormonal changes – Increased oil production may contribute in some people.
- Genetic tendency – Some people are more prone to developing multiple cysts.
- Skin conditions – Certain acne-related or inflammatory skin problems may increase the likelihood.
Common symptoms
A sebaceous cyst may appear as:
- A round, soft or firm lump beneath the skin
- A bump that moves slightly when pressed
- A small opening or dark dot on the surface (a punctum)
- Slow growth over months or years
- Little or no pain unless it becomes inflamed
Home remedies and self-care
Small, non-infected cysts often do not require immediate treatment. These measures may help with comfort and reduce irritation:
1. Warm compress
- Apply a clean, warm (not hot) cloth to the cyst for 10–15 minutes, several times a day.
- This may encourage drainage and relieve tenderness if the area is irritated.
2. Keep the area clean
- Wash gently with mild soap and water.
- Avoid harsh scrubbing, which can worsen irritation.
3. Avoid squeezing or popping it
- Trying to burst a cyst can push material deeper into the skin and increase the risk of:
- Infection
- Swelling
- Scarring
- Recurrence
4. Reduce friction
- Avoid tight clothing or repeated rubbing over the cyst.
5. Manage skin health
- Use non-comedogenic skincare products if you are prone to clogged pores.
- Treat acne or oily skin appropriately
