The five drinks that are most harmful to your bones, according to health experts.

Some drinks can negatively affect bone health when consumed frequently, especially if they replace calcium-rich beverages or contribute to habits that affect bone density. The impact depends on your overall diet, activity level, and health.

5 drinks often considered harmful to bone health when consumed excessively

  1. Sugary soft drinks (sodas)
    • High sugar intake may be linked with poorer overall diet quality.
    • Some colas contain phosphoric acid, which has been studied for possible associations with lower bone density when cola intake is high and calcium intake is low.
  2. Excessive alcohol
    • Heavy alcohol consumption can interfere with calcium absorption, affect vitamin D activity, and increase the risk of weaker bones and fractures.
  3. Energy drinks
    • They may contain high amounts of caffeine and sugar. Excessive caffeine intake may slightly reduce calcium retention, especially when calcium intake is inadequate.
  4. Sweetened coffee and tea drinks
    • Large amounts of added sugar and high caffeine intake can contribute to a less bone-supportive diet if they replace nutritious foods.
  5. High-sugar fruit drinks and sports drinks
    • These often provide added sugars without the nutrients found in whole fruits or dairy products.

Drinks that support bone health

  • Milk or calcium-fortified alternatives (such as fortified soy milk)
  • Water (for hydration)
  • Fortified drinks containing calcium and vitamin D

Having an occasional soda or coffee is unlikely to “damage” your bones by itself. Bone health is more strongly influenced by calcium and vitamin D intake, exercise (especially weight-bearing activity), smoking, alcohol use, and overall diet.
