Constant phlegm or mucus in the throat (often described as “something stuck in my throat”) is common and can have many causes. It does not always mean there is an infection. The best way to get rid of it is to identify the reason your body is producing extra mucus.
Common causes of constant throat mucus
1. Postnasal drip (mucus draining from the nose)
One of the most common causes.
- Allergies, sinus irritation, colds, or nasal congestion can make mucus run down the back of the throat.
- Symptoms may include throat clearing, coughing, and a “lump” sensation.
What may help:
- Saline nasal rinses or sprays
- Treating allergies if present
- Drinking enough fluids
- Avoiding smoke and strong fragrances
2. Acid reflux (GERD or silent reflux)
Stomach acid can irritate the throat and trigger extra mucus production.
Possible clues:
- Mucus worse after meals or when lying down
- Hoarseness
- Frequent throat clearing
- Bitter taste or heartburn (sometimes absent)
What may help:
- Avoid eating close to bedtime
- Reduce trigger foods (often spicy, fatty foods, caffeine, chocolate, or acidic foods)
- Raise the head of the bed if nighttime symptoms occur
3. Allergies
Allergic reactions can keep the nose and throat inflamed for weeks or months.
Common triggers:
- Dust mites
- Pollen
- Pet dander
- Mold
What may help:
- Reducing exposure to triggers
- Washing bedding regularly
- Discussing allergy treatments with a healthcare professional
4. Smoking or exposure to irritants
Smoke damages airway lining and can increase mucus production.
Other irritants:
- Air pollution
- Chemical fumes
- Strong perfumes
Stopping smoking or reducing exposure can significantly improve mucus over time.
5. Chronic sinus problems
Long-lasting sinus inflammation can cause thick mucus and throat drainage.
Possible signs:
- Facial pressure
- Blocked nose
- Reduced sense of smell
- Thick or discolored mucus
6. Asthma or airway inflammation
Some people with asthma have chronic cough and mucus without obvious wheezing.
7. Dehydration
When you are dehydrated, mucus becomes thicker and harder to clear.
Helpful steps:
- Drink enough water
- Use a humidifier if the air is dry
