These things appear in my toilet after it rains. Any idea what they are?

If you can share a photo, I can help identify them more accurately.

Without a picture, things that commonly appear in toilets after heavy rain include:

  • Drain fly larvae (small, worm-like larvae living in organic buildup inside drains)
  • Earthworms that enter damaged sewer or drainage systems during flooding
  • Sewage worms (tiny reddish or gray worms that can appear when sewer lines back up)
  • Insect larvae from standing water connected to plumbing issues
  • Cockroaches or other insects driven into plumbing systems by rising groundwater

A few questions that would help:

  1. What do they look like (worms, insects, eggs, jelly-like blobs, etc.)?
  2. Approximately how big are they?
  3. What color are they?
  4. Do they appear in the bowl water, under the rim, or coming up from the drain?
  5. Are you in an area that experiences flooding or heavy rainfall?

If you upload a photo, I can usually narrow it down much more confidently.
