These visible signs may be hiding liver disease

Visible Signs That May Be Linked to Liver Disease

The liver can be affected by many conditions, including fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver injury, and cirrhosis. Early liver disease may cause few or no symptoms, but certain visible changes can be warning signs that deserve medical attention.

1. Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)

  • A yellow tint to the eyes or skin can happen when bilirubin builds up in the blood.
  • It may indicate that the liver is not processing or removing bilirubin properly.

2. Swelling in the abdomen or legs

  • Fluid buildup can cause:
    • A swollen belly (ascites)
    • Swollen ankles or legs
  • This can occur in more advanced liver disease.

3. Easy bruising or unusual bleeding

  • The liver produces proteins involved in blood clotting.
  • Liver problems can sometimes lead to easier bruising or prolonged bleeding.

4. Changes in the skin

Possible signs include:

  • Spider angiomas (small, spider-like blood vessels visible under the skin)
  • Redness of the palms (palmar erythema)
  • Persistent itching

5. Dark urine or pale stools

  • Dark urine or unusually pale/clay-colored stools may occur when bile flow is affected.

6. Fatigue and muscle loss

  • Ongoing tiredness, weakness, or unexplained loss of muscle mass can occur with chronic liver problems.

7. Confusion or changes in mental alertness

  • In severe liver disease, buildup of toxins can affect brain function, causing confusion, sleepiness, or personality changes.

When to seek medical care urgently

Get prompt medical attention for:

  • Yellow skin/eyes that appear suddenly
  • Vomiting blood or black stools
  • Severe abdominal swelling or pain
  • Confusion, fainting, or extreme drowsiness
