Turkish Bread Recipe (Soft, Fluffy & Easy)

Turkish bread is known for its soft texture, slightly chewy crumb, and warm, fresh-baked aroma. It’s often served with kebabs, soups, dips like hummus, or eaten with butter and cheese.

This version gives you a homemade soft Turkish-style bread using basic ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water (plus a little extra if needed)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil (or vegetable oil)
  • ½ cup warm milk (optional but makes it softer)

Step-by-Step Method

1. Activate the yeast (if needed)

If using active dry yeast:

  • Mix warm water, sugar, and yeast
  • Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy

(Instant yeast can be mixed directly with flour.)

2. Make the dough

  • In a large bowl, combine flour and salt
  • Add yeast mixture, warm milk, and olive oil
  • Mix until a soft dough forms

3. Knead until smooth

  • Knead for 8–10 minutes
  • Dough should become soft, elastic, and slightly sticky

Tip: Add a little flour only if it’s too sticky.

4. First rise

  • Cover the dough with a cloth
  • Let it rest for 1 to 1.5 hours
  • It should double in size

5. Shape the bread

  • Divide dough into 6–8 equal balls
  • Roll each into a round or oval shape

6. Cook (choose one method)

🥄 Pan method (traditional style)

  • Heat a non-stick pan
  • Cook each side for 1–2 minutes
  • Light brown spots will appear

🔥 Oven method

  • Preheat oven to 220°C (428°F)
  • Bake for 8–12 minutes until lightly golden

7. Finish with softness

  • Brush warm bread with butter or olive oil
  • Cover with a cloth to keep it soft

Serving Ideas

  • With grilled meats (kebabs, chicken)
  • With dips like hummus or yogurt sauce
  • As sandwich bread
  • With soups and stews

Tips for Best Turkish Bread

  • Don’t overbake (keeps it soft)
  • Keep dough slightly soft for fluffiness
  • Rest bread after cooking to trap moisture
  • Add yogurt instead of milk for extra tenderness
