Waking up with dry mouth? Here’s what your body might be telling you

Waking up with a dry mouth occasionally is common, but if it happens frequently it may be a sign of an underlying issue.

Some common causes include:

  1. Mouth breathing
    • Nasal congestion from allergies, a cold, or a deviated septum can lead to breathing through your mouth while you sleep.
  2. Dehydration
    • Not drinking enough fluids, excessive sweating, vomiting, or diarrhea can reduce saliva production.
  3. Medications
    • Many medicines can cause dry mouth, including some antihistamines, antidepressants, blood pressure medications, and decongestants.
  4. Snoring or sleep apnea
    • Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea can contribute to waking with a dry mouth, especially if you sleep with your mouth open.
  5. Diabetes
    • Persistently high blood sugar can cause increased thirst and dry mouth.
  6. Salivary gland disorders
    • Some medical conditions or treatments can reduce saliva production.
  7. Autoimmune conditions
    • Conditions such as Sjögren syndrome can cause chronic dry mouth and dry eyes.

What you can do

  • Drink enough water throughout the day.
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco, which can worsen dry mouth.
  • Limit caffeine if it seems to make symptoms worse.
  • Use a bedside humidifier if your bedroom air is very dry.
  • Treat nasal congestion if that’s causing mouth breathing.
  • Chew sugar-free gum or suck on sugar-free lozenges during the day to stimulate saliva (if appropriate).

When to see a healthcare professional

Arrange an evaluation if:

  • Dry mouth happens most mornings for several weeks.
  • You also have dry eyes, difficulty swallowing, or frequent dental cavities.
  • You have loud snoring, pauses in breathing during sleep, or excessive daytime sleepiness.
  • You have increased thirst, frequent urination, or unexplained weight loss.

Persistent dry mouth isn’t just uncomfortable—it can increase the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and oral infections, so it’s worth investigating if it continues.
