If you’ve found a silverfish in your home, it does not automatically mean something dangerous is happening. Viral posts often make silverfish sound like a major warning sign, but they are common household insects and are generally not harmful to people.
Seeing silverfish can indicate:
- High humidity or moisture
- Silverfish prefer damp, humid areas such as bathrooms, basements, kitchens, and laundry rooms.
- Available food sources
- They feed on starches and carbohydrates, including paper, cardboard, glue, book bindings, and some fabrics.
- Hidden cracks or clutter
- They often hide in dark gaps, behind baseboards, and in storage areas.
What you can do:
- Reduce moisture
- Fix leaks, improve ventilation, and use a dehumidifier if needed.
- Remove hiding places
- Reduce piles of cardboard, old papers, and clutter.
- Seal entry points
- Caulk cracks around baseboards, pipes, and windows.
- Vacuum regularly
- Pay attention to corners, closets, and cracks.
A few silverfish do not mean your home is dirty, but a growing number may suggest a moisture problem or an environment they like.
If you’re seeing many silverfish regularly, especially in a specific room, that can be a clue to look for hidden dampness or leaks.
