5 Diabetes Symptoms That May Appear at Night

Some symptoms of diabetes can become more noticeable at night because changes in blood sugar can affect sleep, thirst, and urination patterns. Possible nighttime signs include:

  1. Frequent urination during the night (nocturia)
High blood sugar can cause the kidneys to remove extra glucose through urine, leading to more trips to the bathroom while sleeping.
  2. Excessive thirst at night
Losing more fluids through frequent urination can leave you unusually thirsty, including waking up needing water.
  3. Night sweats or feeling unusually hot
Blood sugar fluctuations—especially low blood sugar in people taking insulin or certain diabetes medications—can trigger sweating, shakiness, or a racing heartbeat during sleep.
  4. Trouble sleeping or waking up repeatedly
Blood sugar changes, thirst, frequent urination, or discomfort from nerve symptoms may interrupt sleep.
  5. Tingling, burning, or numbness in the feet
Diabetes-related nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy) can cause uncomfortable sensations that become more noticeable at night when there are fewer distractions.

These symptoms can have many causes besides diabetes. If you regularly experience several of them—especially increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, or blurred vision—it’s worth discussing with a healthcare professional and considering a blood glucose test.
