You Cut Open a Watermelon and Saw Cracks? Stop Eating It Immediately! Here’s What It Really Means

The claim that you must immediately stop eating a watermelon if you see cracks inside it is exaggerated. Internal cracks can mean different things, and they are not automatically a sign that the watermelon is dangerous.

Common causes of cracks inside watermelon include:

  • Hollow heart: A condition where gaps or cracks form in the flesh due to stress during growth. The fruit can still be safe to eat if it looks and smells normal.
  • Rapid growth or weather changes: Fluctuations in water supply, temperature, or growing conditions can cause internal splitting.
  • Overripe or damaged fruit: Cracks accompanied by signs of spoilage may indicate the watermelon should be discarded.

You should avoid eating it if you notice:

  • A sour, fermented, or rotten smell
  • Slimy or mushy flesh
  • Mold
  • Unusual discoloration
  • A fizzy or fermented taste

If the watermelon has normal color, a fresh smell, and firm juicy flesh despite some internal cracks, it is usually fine to eat. The cracks may affect texture, but they do not automatically mean the fruit is toxic.
