Home remedies to remove tartar from teeth

Tartar (also called dental calculus) is hardened plaque that sticks to teeth. Once it forms, you cannot remove it at home with any safe remedy—it has to be removed by a dentist using professional scaling tools.

What home methods can do is prevent more tartar from forming and reduce plaque before it hardens:

What actually helps at home

1) Strong brushing routine

  • Brush 2× daily for 2 minutes
  • Use a fluoride toothpaste
  • Focus on gumline (where tartar starts forming)

2) Flossing daily

  • Removes plaque between teeth where brushes can’t reach
  • This is one of the most effective prevention steps

3) Mouthwash (antibacterial)

  • Helps reduce bacteria that form plaque
  • Look for chlorhexidine or essential-oil based rinses (short-term use if advised)

4) Baking soda (occasional use)

  • Mild abrasive that can reduce surface stains and plaque
  • Don’t overuse—it can wear enamel if used too often

5) Diet control

  • Reduce sugary snacks and soft drinks
  • Drink water after meals to wash away food particles

6) Oil pulling (limited evidence)

  • Swishing coconut oil may slightly reduce bacteria
  • It does NOT remove tartar already formed

Important reality check

Once plaque hardens into Dental calculus:

  • It bonds strongly to enamel
  • Only professional scaling can remove it
  • Trying to scrape it yourself can damage gums and teeth
