Lou Gehrig’s syndrome: Here are the first symptoms of this disease

“Lou Gehrig’s syndrome” is another name for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurological disease that affects the nerve cells controlling voluntary muscles.

Early symptoms are often subtle and easy to miss, because they usually start in one area of the body and slowly spread.

First symptoms of ALS

1. Muscle weakness (most common early sign)

  • Trouble lifting objects
  • Weak grip (dropping things)
  • Difficulty climbing stairs or walking normally

2. Clumsiness or loss of coordination

  • Tripping more often
  • Trouble with fine motor tasks (buttoning clothes, writing)
  • Hand “not doing what you want it to do”

3. Muscle twitching (fasciculations)

  • Small, visible muscle twitches under the skin
  • Often in arms, legs, or tongue

4. Muscle cramps or stiffness

  • Painful cramps in limbs
  • Stiff or tight muscles
  • Feeling “tight” even at rest

5. Slurred speech (early bulbar symptom)

  • Speech becomes unclear or slow
  • Difficulty pronouncing words

6. Trouble swallowing

  • Choking on liquids or food
  • Feeling like food “sticks” in the throat

7. Hand weakness or loss of dexterity

  • Difficulty turning keys or using phones
  • Writing becomes messy or slow

Important reality check

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis usually:

  • Starts slowly and asymmetrically (one hand, one leg, or speech first)
  • Does NOT cause numbness or tingling early (that points more to nerve compression or other conditions)
  • Progresses over time, but early symptoms can be mistaken for fatigue, vitamin issues, or spine problems

When to see a doctor

You should get checked if you notice:

  • Progressive (worsening) weakness over weeks/months
  • Muscle wasting or shrinking
  • Speech or swallowing changes
  • Persistent twitching with weakness (not just twitching alone)

Important reassurance

Most muscle twitching, weakness, or cramps are
