A simple homemade floor cleaner can work well for many sealed floors, but the right recipe depends on the flooring material.
For tile, vinyl, or sealed laminate
Mix:
- 2 liters (about ½ gallon) of warm water
- 2 tablespoons of white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon of mild dish soap
- Optional: 5–10 drops of essential oil (such as lemon or lavender) for fragrance
Use a damp (not soaking wet) mop, then let the floor air dry.
For sealed hardwood floors
Mix:
- 2 liters of warm water
- A few drops of pH-neutral wood floor cleaner or mild dish soap
Avoid using vinegar on hardwood regularly, as repeated exposure to acid may dull some finishes over time.
Avoid
- Bleach mixed with vinegar or ammonia (this can produce dangerous gases).
- Excessive soap, which can leave a sticky residue.
- Too much water on wood or laminate floors, as it can cause damage.
A homemade cleaner can remove everyday dirt and grime, but it won’t literally make an old floor “like new.” Scratches, worn finishes, and stains may require refinishing or specialized cleaning products.
