How to effectively clean ceramic glass cooktops without scratching them

To clean a ceramic glass cooktop without scratching it, use gentle methods and avoid anything abrasive.

What you’ll need

  • Soft microfiber cloths
  • Warm water
  • Mild dish soap
  • Cooktop cleaner made for glass-ceramic surfaces (optional)
  • A cooktop scraper with a razor blade designed for glass cooktops (for stubborn residue)

Step-by-step method

  1. Let the cooktop cool completely.
Never clean a hot surface with cold water, as sudden temperature changes can damage the glass.
  2. Remove loose debris.
Wipe away crumbs and food particles with a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth.
  3. Clean everyday spills.
Mix warm water with a small amount of dish soap, wipe the surface, then dry with a clean microfiber cloth to prevent streaks.
  4. Remove burned-on residue.
Apply a ceramic cooktop cleaner and let it sit as directed. For stubborn spots, use a proper glass-cooktop scraper held at a low angle. Avoid digging into the surface.
  5. Polish and dry.
Buff with a dry microfiber cloth until the surface is clear and streak-free.

Avoid using:

  • Steel wool or scouring pads
  • Abrasive powders
  • Rough scrub brushes
  • Knives or metal tools not designed for cooktops
  • Harsh oven cleaners or bleach-based products

Prevention tips

  • Wipe spills soon after cooking (especially sugar, syrup, or melted plastic).
  • Lift cookware instead of sliding it across the surface.
  • Check the bottoms of pots and pans for grit before placing them on the cooktop.

A little regular maintenance is usually enough to keep a ceramic glass cooktop shiny and scratch-free.
