Here’s how to have geraniums full of flowers: you have to water them like this to always have them thriving

How to Water Geraniums So They Stay Full of Flowers and ThriveGeraniums (also called pelargoniums) are popular flowering plants because they can produce lots of colourful blooms when they receive the right care. One of the biggest secrets to keeping them healthy is proper watering—not simply giving them more water. The goal is to keep the roots healthy: moist enough to grow, but never constantly soaked.

1. Water Only When the Soil Starts to Dry

Geraniums prefer slightly dry conditions between waterings.

A simple check:

  • Push your finger about 2–3 cm into the soil.
  • If it feels dry, it is time to water.
  • If it still feels damp, wait a little longer.

Overwatering is one of the most common reasons geraniums stop flowering.

2. Water Deeply, Not Frequently

Instead of giving small amounts every day:

✅ Water thoroughly until excess water drains from the bottom of the pot.
✅ Allow the soil to dry slightly before watering again.

This encourages strong roots and healthier plants.

3. Avoid Wet Leaves and Flowers

When watering:

  • Pour water directly onto the soil.
  • Avoid constantly splashing leaves and flowers.

Wet foliage can encourage fungal problems, especially in humid conditions.

4. Adjust Watering With the Weather

Geraniums need different amounts of water depending on conditions:

Hot, sunny days:

  • They may need watering more often because pots dry quickly.

Cool or rainy periods:

  • Reduce watering because the soil stays moist longer.

Indoor plants:

  • Usually need less water than outdoor geraniums.

5. Use Good Drainage

Geraniums dislike standing water.

For healthier plants:

  • Use pots with drainage holes.
  • Use a light, well-draining potting mix.
  • Empty excess water from trays or saucers.

Soggy roots can lead to:

  • Yellow leaves
  • Root rot
  • Weak growth
  • Fewer flowers

6. Feed for More Blooms

Water alone will not create a flower-filled geranium.

During the growing season:

  • Use a balanced flowering plant fertiliser.
  • Follow the product instructions.
  • Avoid overfeeding, which can produce lots of leaves but fewer flowers.

7. Remove Faded Flowers

Regularly remove old blooms (called deadheading).

This encourages the plant to focus energy on producing new flowers rather than seeds.

8. Give Plenty of Light

Geraniums usually flower best with:

  • Several hours of sunlight daily
  • Bright conditions
  • Good air circulation

A plant that is healthy but not flowering may simply need more light.

The Simple Geranium Watering Rule

🌸 Water deeply when the top layer of soil is dry.
🌸 Never leave roots sitting in water.
🌸 Adjust watering based on heat, sunlight, and season.

With the right balance of water, sunlight, feeding, and regular care, geraniums can remain vigorous and produce abundant blooms throughout their flowering season.
