11 ways to get your peace lily to bloom

If your peace lily has healthy green leaves but isn’t producing flowers, the cause is often related to growing conditions rather than a lack of a “magic” fertilizer. Here are 11 ways to encourage it to bloom:

  1. Provide bright, indirect light
    • Peace lilies bloom best in bright, filtered light. Too little light often results in lush leaves but few or no flowers.
  2. Water consistently
    • Water when the top inch (2–3 cm) of soil feels dry. Keep the soil lightly moist, but don’t let it stay soggy.
  3. Use a well-draining potting mix
    • A loose, well-draining mix helps prevent root rot.
  4. Fertilize sparingly
    • Feed with a balanced houseplant fertilizer during spring and summer, following the label directions. Too much fertilizer can reduce flowering.
  5. Keep it slightly root-bound
    • Peace lilies often bloom better when they are a little snug in their pot. Repot only when necessary.
  6. Maintain warm temperatures
    • They prefer temperatures around 65–85°F (18–29°C) and should be protected from cold drafts.
  7. Increase humidity
    • Higher humidity can help keep the plant healthy. A humidifier or pebble tray may be beneficial in dry homes.
  8. Clean the leaves
    • Wipe dust from the leaves with a damp cloth so they can absorb light more effectively.
  9. Remove old flowers
    • Trim spent flower stalks at the base to encourage new growth.
  10. Check for pests
    • Spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects can weaken the plant and interfere with flowering.
  11. Be patient
    • After improving conditions, it may take several weeks or even months before a healthy peace lily produces new blooms.

Common reasons a peace lily won’t bloom

  • Not enough light
  • Overwatering or underwatering
  • Excess fertilizer
  • A pot that’s too large
  • The plant is still maturing or recovering from stress

There is no evidence that homemade remedies like sugar water, coffee grounds, milk, or a teaspoon of household ingredients will reliably make a peace lily bloom. Consistent care is much more effective.

If your peace lily has many leaves but no flowers, tell me:

  • How long you’ve had it
  • Where it’s placed (near a window or in a darker spot)
  • How often you water it

I can help identify the most likely reason it isn’t blooming.
