From age 65, how often should you shower (and why over-washing can be harmful to your health)

There isn’t a single “correct” shower frequency after age 65. For many older adults, showering 2–3 times per week is enough to maintain good hygiene while helping protect the skin. Some people may need to shower more often (for example, after exercise, in hot weather, or if they have certain medical conditions), while others may do well with less frequent full-body showers.

Why over-washing can be harmful

As we age, the skin naturally:

  • Produces less oil.
  • Becomes thinner and more fragile.
  • Loses moisture more easily.

Frequent or prolonged hot showers can:

  • Strip away the skin’s natural oils.
  • Cause dry, itchy, or cracked skin.
  • Worsen conditions like eczema.
  • Increase the risk of skin tears and, if cracks develop, potentially increase the chance of infection.

How to shower in a skin-friendly way

To help protect aging skin:

  • Use lukewarm rather than hot water.
  • Keep showers to about 5–10 minutes.
  • Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, focusing on areas that need it most (such as the underarms, groin, feet, and skin folds) instead of scrubbing the entire body every time.
  • Gently pat the skin dry with a towel.
  • Apply a moisturizer within a few minutes after showering to lock in moisture.

On days you don’t shower

You can still maintain good hygiene by:

  • Washing your face.
  • Cleaning the underarms and groin.
  • Washing your hands regularly.
  • Changing into clean underwear and clothing as needed.

When more frequent bathing may be appropriate

You may need to shower daily or more often if you:

  • Sweat heavily or exercise regularly.
  • Work in a dirty environment.
  • Have bowel or bladder incontinence.
  • Have a medical condition that requires more frequent cleansing.
  • Have been advised by your healthcare provider to bathe more often.

If you have persistent itching, severe dryness, skin sores, or frequent skin infections, it’s worth discussing your bathing routine and skin care with a healthcare professional, as they can recommend products or treatments tailored to your skin.
