The fastest way to get rid of silicone mold in a shower is usually to remove and replace the silicone caulk if the mold has grown into it. Surface cleaners may lighten stains, but they often won’t kill mold embedded inside old silicone.
Fastest method (replace the caulk)
You’ll need:
- Utility knife or caulk remover tool
- Mold-killing bathroom cleaner or diluted bleach solution
- Scrub brush/toothbrush
- New 100% bathroom silicone caulk (mildew-resistant)
Steps
- Cut out the old silicone
- Slice along both edges of the caulk bead.
- Pull the silicone strip away.
- Remove leftover pieces with a scraper.
- Kill remaining mold
- Spray the area with a bathroom mold remover or a bleach solution (about 1 part bleach to 10 parts water).
- Leave it for 10–15 minutes.
- Scrub and rinse.
- Let the area dry completely.
- Apply new silicone
- Use a shower-rated, mildew-resistant 100% silicone caulk.
- Smooth the bead and allow it to cure fully (often 24 hours or more) before using the shower.
If you need a quick temporary fix
For surface mold only:
- Spray hydrogen peroxide (3%) or a bathroom mold cleaner.
- Wait 10 minutes.
- Scrub with a toothbrush.
- Rinse and dry.
To prevent it coming back:
- Run the exhaust fan during and after showers.
- Squeegee wet walls.
- Keep shower corners dry when possible.
- Avoid caulking over existing mold — it traps it underneath.
