If your gas stove flame has become weak or uneven, the burner nozzles (jets) are often partially clogged with grease, dust, or food residue. You can usually fix it safely at home with a simple cleaning method.
What you’ll need
- A sewing needle, safety pin, or thin copper wire
- An old toothbrush
- Warm water + dish soap
- White vinegar or lemon juice
- Dry cloth or tissue
Step-by-step homemade cleaning trick
- Turn off the gas completely
- Shut off the stove and, if possible, the main gas valve.
- Let the burners cool fully.
- Remove burner caps and rings
- Lift off the metal burner parts carefully.
- Soak the burner parts
- Put them in warm water mixed with dish soap and a little vinegar or lemon juice for 15–20 minutes.
- This loosens grease and carbon buildup.
- Clean the tiny nozzle holes
- Use a thin needle or pin to gently clear each hole.
- Do not force a large object into the holes because it can widen them and damage the flame pattern.
- Brush away residue
- Scrub with a toothbrush and rinse with clean water.
- Dry everything completely
- Moisture inside the burner can weaken ignition and flame strength.
- Reassemble and test
- Put the burner parts back properly aligned.
- Turn the gas on and ignite the burner.
Extra trick for a stronger blue flame
If the flame is still yellow or weak:
- Check the air shutter/air intake near the burner tube underneath the stove top.
- Slightly opening the air intake increases oxygen and usually produces a stronger blue flame.
A healthy flame should be:
- Steady
- Mostly blue
- Even around the burner
Important safety notes
- Never use toothpicks; wood can break inside the nozzle.
- Don’t enlarge the nozzle opening.
- If you smell gas after reassembly, turn everything off immediately and ventilate the area.
- If the flame remains weak on all burners, the regulator or gas pressure may need professional inspection.
