A washing machine detergent drawer can collect soap residue, fabric softener buildup, and mold or mildew, especially if it stays damp. A simple cleaning routine can help keep it fresh:
How to clean the washing machine drawer
- Remove the drawer
- Pull it out as far as it goes and press the release tab (if your machine has one).
- Soak it
- Place the drawer in warm water with a little dish soap for 15–30 minutes.
- Scrub away buildup with an old toothbrush or small brush.
- Clean the drawer compartment
- Wipe inside the machine where the drawer sits.
- Use a cloth or brush to reach corners where mold can grow.
- For mold or stubborn residue
- Use a bathroom mold cleaner or a diluted bleach solution if your machine manufacturer allows it.
- Never mix bleach with vinegar or other cleaning products.
- Dry everything
- Let the drawer and compartment dry completely before putting the drawer back.
Prevent mold from returning
- Leave the detergent drawer slightly open after washing.
- Wipe away standing water.
- Avoid using too much detergent or fabric softener.
- Run a hot maintenance wash occasionally (following your machine’s instructions).
A clean drawer helps, but remember that mold can also grow in the rubber door seal, filter, and drum, so those areas may need occasional cleaning too.
