Brittle or fragile nails: what your body is trying to tell you … cmnt

Brittle or fragile nails usually aren’t just a cosmetic issue—they can be a small signal of what’s going on inside your body or how your nails are being treated.

When nails become dry, split easily, peel, or break frequently, your body may be hinting at one or more of the following:

1) Nutrient deficiencies
Low levels of iron (anemia), biotin, protein, or zinc can weaken nail structure. Iron deficiency in particular often shows up as thin, spoon-shaped, or easily breakable nails.

2) Thyroid imbalance
Both overactive and underactive thyroid conditions can affect nail growth, making them brittle or slow-growing.

3) Dehydration or low moisture
Just like skin, nails need hydration. Frequent handwashing, sanitizers, or dry weather can strip moisture and make nails fragile.

4) Chemical or physical damage
Regular exposure to detergents, nail polish remover (especially acetone), or frequent gel/acrylic nails can weaken the nail plate.

5) Medical conditions
Some conditions like fungal infections or skin disorders can also affect nail strength and texture.

In medical terms, this is often referred to as Brittle nails, and it’s usually a symptom rather than a standalone disease.

When to pay attention:
If brittleness comes with fatigue, hair loss, pale skin, or weight changes, it’s worth checking iron levels and thyroid function.

If you want, tell me what your nails look like (splitting, peeling, ridges, etc.), and I can narrow down the most likely cause.
