Clear your throat and lungs of mucus with this recipe – just 2 ingredients

If you’re looking for a simple home remedy, a common two-ingredient recipe often shared is:

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1–2 teaspoons honey

You can also use:

  • Warm water with the juice of half a lemon

These drinks may help soothe the throat and make mucus feel easier to clear, especially if you’re well hydrated.

However, it’s important to be cautious about claims like “clear your throat and lungs of mucus”. There is no scientific evidence that any two-ingredient recipe can remove mucus from the lungs. Your body naturally clears mucus through coughing and the tiny hair-like structures (cilia) in your airways.

If you’re dealing with excess mucus, these approaches have better evidence for helping:

  • Drink plenty of fluids to keep mucus thinner.
  • Inhale steam from a warm shower or use a humidifier.
  • Gargle with warm salt water for throat mucus and irritation.
  • Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke.
  • If appropriate, over-the-counter expectorants containing Guaifenesin may help loosen mucus.

If you have mucus that lasts more than 3–4 weeks, is accompanied by fever, shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing up blood, or thick green or foul-smelling sputum, it’s important to seek medical evaluation, as these symptoms can indicate an underlying condition that needs treatment.
