Clear your throat and lungs of mucus with this recipe – just 2 ingredients

A two-ingredient drink can sometimes soothe throat irritation and help loosen mucus, but it cannot literally “clear your lungs” of mucus or remove infections. Your lungs already have natural cleaning systems (like mucus movement and tiny airway hairs called cilia). If you have a lot of mucus, the goal is usually to thin it and make it easier to cough out.

Simple 2-Ingredient Honey & Ginger Drink

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 teaspoon honey + a few slices of fresh ginger (or 1 teaspoon ginger juice)

How to make it:

  1. Add ginger to warm water and let it steep for 5–10 minutes.
  2. Stir in honey once the water is warm (not boiling).
  3. Sip slowly.

How it may help:

  • Honey can coat and soothe an irritated throat and may reduce coughing in some people.
  • Ginger contains compounds with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and may help relieve throat discomfort.

Other mucus-relief tips:

  • Drink plenty of fluids to help keep mucus thinner.
  • Use steam from a warm shower or a humidifier if dry air worsens symptoms.
  • Avoid smoke and other airway irritants.

See a healthcare professional if you have:

  • Mucus lasting more than a few weeks
  • Blood in mucus
  • Chest pain, trouble breathing, or wheezing
  • High fever or worsening symptoms

Also note: Honey should not be given to children under 1 year old.
