Don’t EVER use magnesium if you’re on any of the following medications

If you’re referring to a warning list, the statement needs some context: magnesium supplements can interact with certain medications, but it is not true that everyone taking these medicines must “never” use magnesium. The concern is usually that magnesium can reduce absorption of some drugs or affect how they work, so timing or medical guidance may be needed.

Medications that commonly require caution with magnesium include:

  • Certain antibiotics — especially tetracyclines (e.g., doxycycline) and fluoroquinolones (e.g., ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin). Magnesium can bind these drugs and make them less effective.
  • Thyroid hormone replacement — such as levothyroxine. Magnesium may reduce absorption.
  • Bisphosphonates for osteoporosis — such as alendronate. Magnesium can interfere with absorption.
  • Some blood pressure medications — particularly certain diuretics or medications that affect magnesium levels.
  • Some muscle relaxants or sedatives — magnesium may add to effects in some cases.
  • Certain heart medications — especially if kidney function is reduced or magnesium levels need close monitoring.

General spacing advice often used:

  • Separate magnesium from levothyroxine, bisphosphonates, and many antibiotics by at least 2–4 hours (follow the specific medication instructions).

If you share the exact medication names you’re concerned about, I can check the specific magnesium interaction.
