Here’s how to clean dirty bed pillows to leave them white and smelling sweet.

Over time, pillows can collect sweat, body oils, dust, and odors. Many pillows can be cleaned at home, but the right method depends on the pillow filling and care label.

How to clean and freshen bed pillows

1. Check the care label first

  • Machine-washable: Many polyester and some down/feather pillows can be washed.
  • Memory foam or latex: Usually should not be machine-washed; they can be damaged by soaking.

2. Wash washable pillows

  1. Remove pillowcases and protectors.
  2. Wash two pillows at a time to keep the washer balanced.
  3. Use a gentle cycle with warm water (if the label allows).
  4. Use a small amount of mild detergent.
  5. Add an extra rinse cycle to remove detergent residue.

3. Dry completely

  • Dry pillows thoroughly on low heat (if allowed).
  • Add dryer balls or clean tennis balls to help fluff down or fiberfill pillows.
  • Make sure the inside is completely dry to prevent mildew.

For odors and yellowing

  • A pillow protector can help prevent future staining.
  • Sunlight and fresh air can help reduce odors.
  • For some washable white pillows, a small amount of oxygen-based bleach may help brighten them—follow the product instructions and pillow care label.

When to replace pillows

Cleaning cannot always restore old pillows. Consider replacing them if:

  • They stay lumpy after fluffing.
  • They no longer support your head and neck.
  • They have persistent odors or stains.
  • They are several years old and heavily used.

A “white and sweet-smelling” pillow is usually the result of proper washing, thorough drying, and regular pillow protection—not a single magic cleaning trick.
