Here’s how to have geraniums full of flowers: you have to water them like this to always have them thriving

Geraniums (Pelargonium) are popular because they can bloom heavily when they get the right balance of water, light, nutrients, and pruning. The “secret watering trick” is usually less about a special formula and more about watering correctly.

How to water geraniums for abundant flowers

🌿 1. Let the soil dry slightly between waterings

  • Geraniums prefer soil that is slightly dry before the next watering.
  • Constantly wet roots can lead to root rot and fewer flowers.

💧 2. Water deeply, not just a little

  • Water until it drains from the bottom of the pot.
  • Empty excess water from saucers so the roots are not sitting in water.

☀️ 3. Water according to conditions

  • Hot, sunny weather: they may need water more often.
  • Cool, cloudy weather: they need much less.

🌸 4. Water the soil, not the leaves and flowers

  • Wet foliage can encourage fungal problems.
  • Aim the water at the base of the plant.

Other ways to encourage more blooms

  • Give them 6+ hours of sunlight daily if possible.
  • Remove faded flowers regularly (“deadheading”) to encourage new blooms.
  • Use a balanced or bloom-focused fertilizer during active growth.
  • Avoid too much nitrogen, which can create lots of leaves but fewer flowers.

A thriving geranium is usually the result of sun + well-drained soil + careful watering, rather than a single secret ingredient.
