The idea of leaving an upturned glass and a piece of paper in the sink before a vacation is a popular household tip, but it is often shared without much explanation.
The purpose is usually to help you detect possible problems while you were away:
- Paper under an upside-down glass: If the glass moves, tips over, or the paper becomes wet, it may indicate that something happened in the kitchen while you were gone (for example, a leak, water overflow, or someone moving items).
- Glass as a simple “marker”: It can serve as a quick visual check that the sink area was not disturbed.
However, it is not a reliable way to prevent damage from leaks, pests, or plumbing problems.
Before leaving for a longer trip, more useful steps include:
- Turn off the main water supply if appropriate (especially for long vacations).
- Check faucets, pipes, and under-sink areas for leaks.
- Empty food waste and clean the sink to discourage pests.
- Unplug nonessential appliances.
- Ask someone you trust to check your home if you’ll be away for an extended period.
The glass-and-paper trick is more of a simple indicator, not a substitute for proper home preparation.
