Hip pain: what does it mean?

Hip pain simply means discomfort in or around the hip joint, but the meaning depends on the cause, and there are several possibilities.

Common reasons for hip pain

1. Joint problems

  • Osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear of the joint) is one of the most common causes, especially with age.
  • Pain is usually in the groin, thigh, or buttock and may worsen with walking or standing.

2. Muscle or tendon strain

  • Overuse, heavy lifting, or sudden movement can strain muscles around the hip.
  • Pain often improves with rest.

3. Bursitis

  • Inflammation of small fluid-filled sacs (bursae) near the hip.
  • Pain is often on the outer side of the hip and worsens when lying on that side.

4. Sciatica / nerve-related pain

  • Irritation of the sciatic nerve can cause pain that starts in the lower back and travels to the hip and leg.

5. Injury

  • Falls, accidents, or fractures (especially in older adults or those with weak bones).

6. Other causes

  • Hernias, lower back problems, or sometimes infections (rare but serious).

When hip pain needs attention

You should get checked if:

  • Pain lasts more than 1–2 weeks
  • It is getting worse
  • You have trouble walking or bearing weight
  • There is swelling, redness, or fever
  • Pain follows a fall or injury

Bottom line

Hip pain is a symptom, not a disease itself—it can range from simple muscle strain to arthritis or nerve issues.

If you want, describe your pain (location, when it happens, how long it’s been going on), and I can help narrow down the most likely cause.
