How your body removes waste
Your body already has effective systems for eliminating waste:
- The liver processes many substances.
- The kidneys filter waste from the blood.
- The intestines move digested food and stool out of the body through regular bowel movements.
In healthy people, the intestines do not accumulate pounds of toxins that need to be “flushed out.”
Why “detox” recipes seem to work
Many detox drinks or cleanses contain ingredients that:
- Increase water intake
- Add fiber
- Act as mild laxatives
This can lead to more frequent bowel movements, but it does not mean toxins are being removed. Any weight loss is usually temporary and mainly reflects loss of water and stool.
What actually supports digestive health
Evidence-based ways to promote healthy bowel function include:
- Eating plenty of fiber from fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains
- Drinking enough fluids
- Exercising regularly
- Getting adequate sleep
- Seeking medical care for persistent constipation or other digestive symptoms
Be cautious with extreme cleanses
Some colon cleanses or detox products can cause:
- Diarrhea
- Dehydration
- Electrolyte imbalances
- Dependence on laxatives
- Interactions with medications
Bottom line
There is no proven two-ingredient remedy that removes pounds of toxins from the intestines. If a recipe claims to “cleanse” or “detox” your colon overnight, it’s almost certainly exaggerating. A balanced diet, adequate fiber, hydration, and regular physical activity are the safest and most effective ways to support digestive health.
If you have constipation, bloating, or another digestive concern, I can suggest evidence-based approaches based on your symptoms.
