How to Use Baking Soda to Remove Dark Spots, Wrinkles, and Dark Circles from Your Face

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is often shared online as a “natural” remedy for dark spots, wrinkles, and dark circles, but the evidence does not support it as a proven treatment, and it may irritate the skin.

Does baking soda remove dark spots, wrinkles, or dark circles?

  • Dark spots: Baking soda may lightly exfoliate because it is abrasive, but it does not reliably fade pigmentation. Overuse can irritate skin and potentially make dark spots worse through inflammation.
  • Wrinkles: It cannot reverse wrinkles or rebuild collagen. Effective wrinkle care usually involves ingredients such as retinoids, sunscreen, and moisturisers.
  • Dark circles: Dark circles have many causes (genetics, thin skin, allergies, lack of sleep, pigmentation, shadows). Baking soda will not address the underlying causes and may irritate the delicate under-eye area.

Why you should be cautious

Baking soda is alkaline, while healthy skin is slightly acidic. Applying it to the face may:

  • Disrupt the skin barrier
  • Cause dryness, burning, or redness
  • Trigger sensitivity or breakouts

Safer alternatives

For dark spots:

  • Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+)
  • Vitamin C
  • Niacinamide
  • Azelaic acid
  • Retinoids (if suitable for your skin)

For wrinkles:

  • Sunscreen every day
  • A moisturiser with ingredients like ceramides or hyaluronic acid
  • Retinol/retinoids (introduced gradually)

For dark circles:

  • Treat allergies or rubbing of the eyes if relevant
  • Improve sleep and hydration
  • Use gentle eye products with ingredients like caffeine or niacinamide

If you still want to try baking soda, avoid using it as a facial scrub or under-eye treatment. A small patch test on another area of skin first is safer, and stop if you notice irritation.

If you tell me your age, skin type (oily/dry/sensitive), and whether the dark spots are from acne, sun exposure, or something else, I can suggest a more suitable routine.
