If you are over 60, eating a banana a day provides remarkable health benefits

Eating a banana every day after age 60 can be a healthy habit, but the benefits are often presented more dramatically than the evidence supports. Bananas are a nutrient-rich fruit that can contribute to overall health as part of a balanced diet.

Potential benefits for older adults include:

  • Heart and blood pressure support: Bananas provide potassium, a mineral that helps regulate fluid balance and supports normal blood pressure. (People with kidney disease or certain medications that affect potassium should ask a clinician before increasing potassium intake.)
  • Digestive health: Bananas contain fiber, including resistant starch (especially in less-ripe bananas), which can support regular bowel movements and gut health.
  • Energy and muscle function: The carbohydrates provide a quick source of energy, and potassium helps with normal muscle and nerve function.
  • Bone health support: Potassium-rich diets are associated with healthier bones, partly because they may help reduce calcium loss from the body.
  • Nutrient intake: Bananas provide vitamin B6, vitamin C, and other micronutrients that contribute to normal body function.

However, a banana does not prevent dementia, reverse aging, or by itself protect against major diseases. The strongest health effects come from an overall pattern of eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, adequate protein, whole grains, healthy fats, and maintaining physical activity.

For many people over 60, one medium banana a day is a reasonable choice—unless there is a medical reason to limit potassium or carbohydrates.
