Laundry as white and pure as milk: the ingredient you need

A popular household ingredient for making white clothes look brighter is baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). It can help lift dullness, reduce odors, and improve the cleaning power of detergent.

How to use baking soda for whiter laundry

Method 1: Add it to the washing machine

  1. Put your white clothes in the washer.
  2. Add your usual laundry detergent.
  3. Add ½ cup of baking soda directly into the drum.
  4. Wash using the recommended setting for the fabric.

Why it helps:

  • Neutralizes acidic odors from sweat and dirt.
  • Helps soften hard water, allowing detergent to work better.
  • Can make fabrics feel fresher and appear brighter.

For stubborn yellowing or gray whites

Make a soaking solution:

  • 4 liters of warm water
  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • Soak white clothes for 1–2 hours
  • Wash normally afterward.

Extra tips for “milk-white” laundry:

  • Dry whites in sunlight when the fabric allows it; sunlight can naturally brighten some fabrics.
  • Avoid using too much detergent, as residue can make clothes look dull.
  • Separate whites from colored clothes to prevent dye transfer.

Note: Baking soda helps with freshness and mild dullness, but very old stains or heavy yellowing may need a fabric-safe oxygen bleach product.
