Laundry as White and Pure as Milk: The One Ingredient You Need — Baking Soda
If you want your laundry to look brighter, fresher, and cleaner, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is one simple household ingredient that can help improve the wash.
Why baking soda works
- Boosts detergent performance: It helps detergents work more effectively by balancing the water’s pH, allowing them to remove dirt and oils better.
- Removes odors: It absorbs unpleasant smells trapped in fabrics.
- Helps brighten whites: It can loosen dulling residues from sweat, body oils, and detergent buildup, making white fabrics appear fresher.
- Gentler than harsh bleach: It is a milder option for regular laundry care.
How to use it for whiter laundry
Method 1: In the washing machine
- Put your clothes into the machine.
- Add your normal laundry detergent.
- Add ½ cup (about 100 g) of baking soda directly into the drum or detergent compartment.
- Wash as usual.
Method 2: For heavily soiled white clothes
- Fill a bucket with warm water.
- Add ½–1 cup of baking soda.
- Soak white clothes for 1–2 hours.
- Wash normally afterward.
Extra tips for brighter whites
- Wash white clothes separately from colored fabrics.
- Avoid using too much detergent, as residue can make clothes look dull.
- Dry whites in sunlight when possible; sunlight can naturally help brighten fabrics.
Note: Baking soda will not remove every type of stain (such as strong dye stains or rust), but it is a useful everyday laundry booster. For tough stains, a specialized stain remover or oxygen bleach may work better.
