Claims like “clean 15 kilograms of waste from your colon in one night” are not supported by medical evidence.
Here’s why:
- Your colon does not normally store 15 kg (33 lb) of old waste. In healthy people, stool moves through the digestive tract and is regularly eliminated.
- So-called “colon cleanses” or “detox” drinks do not remove years of accumulated waste or toxins. They usually cause diarrhea, which temporarily empties the bowel of its current contents and water.
- These products or homemade mixtures can sometimes cause dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, abdominal cramping, or diarrhea, especially in older adults or people with certain medical conditions.
If you’re constipated
Safer, evidence-based approaches include:
- Drinking enough water.
- Gradually increasing fiber from fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, or psyllium.
- Exercising regularly, even a daily walk can help.
- Establishing a regular bathroom routine.
- Using an appropriate over-the-counter laxative if needed, following the directions or a healthcare professional’s advice.
When to seek medical care
See a healthcare professional if you have:
- Constipation lasting more than a few weeks
- Blood in your stool
- Severe abdominal pain or vomiting
- Unexplained weight loss
- A sudden, persistent change in bowel habits
The colon is generally very effective at cleaning itself through normal digestion and bowel movements. Most people do not need a “colon cleanse” unless it’s specifically prescribed before certain medical procedures, such as a colonoscopy.
