Scratches on glasses: don’t waste money: apply a little and they’ll disappear instantly.

That’s another viral “instant fix” claim—and it’s misleading.

Scratches on eyeglasses (especially modern ones with coatings) cannot be made to “disappear instantly” with a simple household trick. At best, some methods only temporarily mask tiny surface marks, and at worst they damage the lens coating further.

The item involved is typically prescription eyewear made of coated plastic or polycarbonate lenses (often with anti-glare or scratch-resistant layers).

What’s actually true

  • Very minor surface smudges or micro-scratches may look less visible when filled with oily substances (like petroleum jelly or toothpaste residue).
  • This does not remove the scratch—it just changes how light reflects off it.
  • Any real scratch in the coating or lens material is permanent.

Common “viral hacks” and the reality

  • Toothpaste / baking soda → abrasive; can worsen scratches
  • Oil / wax / petroleum jelly → temporary masking only
  • Glass polish kits → limited effect; not for coated prescription lenses
  • Car polish / metal polish → can strip lens coatings (risky)

Why scratches can’t be “erased”

Most modern lenses have:

  • Hard scratch-resistant coating
  • Anti-reflective coating
  • UV protection layer

Once the coating is damaged, it cannot be restored at home.

What actually works

  • Optician polishing (limited cases only)
  • Lens replacement (most reliable solution)
  • Prevention (case, microfiber cloth, proper cleaning spray)
